Passage to India

"My fellow artist Akim Monet invited me to lunch at his home in NYC. As I entered his dining room, I was immediately struck by several large scale photographs of India. Their saturated colors emanating ethereal light beckoned me to look closer. I felt the spirituality of India, standing there with the afternoon light streaming through the windows, highlighting the details in Monet's images. The solarized effect of the print adds to the sense of otherworldliness and reminds me of an x-ray-- allowing the viewer a view within and an understanding of a Passage to India.

Akim Monet is a true visionary in more ways than one."

This is a marvelous example of the merge between typical indian laticework to the right of the image, and muslim motifs in the form of arabesques. The colours are stone inlaid in the marble.Tied in the laticework, one notices green and purple strings. These silk threads are tied by visitors as they make a wish that is beleieved to come true when the threads disintegrate with the passing of time.

This timeless image was taken at 5am from a rowboat. Francesco Clemente had once told me, as I prepared to depart for India, that I must take a purifying swim in the Ganges. This is as close as I got.The ablutions from the “Ghats” constitute a daily morning ritual for the people of Varanasi.

In the midst of this complex scene, the central couple embraces with extraordinary tenderness. Her arms are flung around him as he holds her. Notice the position of the fingers of his right hand. The small figure at the lower left seems to have a good vantage point from which he can see the intimacy of the action. The lady to the left of the composition stands in a most seductive posture: as she reveals her curvaceous behind, she twists her upper body, enticing the viewer into the scene with her left hand under her breast. This is the epitome of movement in sculpture.
