Passage to India: On the Ganges

On the Ganges,
1992
Ilfochrome print - Ed. 3 + 2AP
Mounted face in 0,6 cm (1/4") Plexiglas
101,6 x 152,4 cm (40 x 60")
This image was shot in Benares, the city also known as Varanasi on the banks of the holy river Ganges. This timeless image was taken at 5am from a rowboat. Francesco Clemente had once told me, as I prepared to depart for India, that I must take a purifying swim in the Ganges.
This is as close as I got.
The ablutions from the “Ghats” constitute a daily morning ritual for the people of Varanasi.
